But decades of scientific searching have failed to find the magic gene, and the truth is far more interesting: sporting dominance is not something a nation is born with. It is something a nation builds.

Somewhere in the highlands of Kenya's Rift Valley, before dawn, thousands of feet are already pounding the red dirt roads in near-perfect rhythm. The natural question is: why? Why should one small population, from one small region, so completely own a global sport? The most common answer you'll hear is the simplest: genetics. They must just be born for it — built, at a biological level, to run. It is an intuitive explanation, and it contains a grain of truth. But it is also, as the science reveals, mostly wrong — and the real answer teaches us something profound about how sporting greatness is actually made.

The tempting genetic story

It's easy to see why the "born to run" explanation is so appealing, because elite East African runners do tend to share certain physical characteristics that look tailor-made for endurance. Many have a slim, light build with long, thin lower legs — and light limbs are cheaper to swing with each stride, improving what physiologists call "running economy," the efficiency with which a runner converts energy into forward motion. Studies have pointed to favourable muscle-fibre composition, efficient oxygen use, and other physiological traits common among these athletes. It genuinely looks, at first glance, like a population physically optimised for running.

And there is one more factor that seems to seal the case: altitude. The heartlands of East African running — Kenya's Rift Valley, the Ethiopian Highlands — sit at elevations of two thousand metres and more above sea level. At that altitude, the air holds less oxygen, and the human body adapts by producing more red blood cells to carry oxygen more effectively — the very same adaptation that endurance athletes chase when they travel to altitude camps to train. Athletes born and raised at these heights have been getting this "altitude training" for their entire lives, from childhood. Put the physique and the altitude together, and the genetic story seems almost obvious.

But when scientists actually went looking for the genetic basis of all this, something surprising happened.

The gene that isn't there

For decades, researchers have searched for a genetic explanation for East African running dominance — examining the DNA of elite Kalenjin and Ethiopian runners, hunting for the variants that might set them apart. And despite all that effort, no compelling genetic explanation has emerged. There is no identified "runner gene," no clear cluster of endurance variants that distinguishes these champions from everyone else in a way that accounts for their extraordinary success. There is also a powerful logical reason to be sceptical of the pure-genetics narrative, and it's important. The dominance is not spread across "Africans" broadly, or even across Kenyans broadly — it is heavily concentrated in a few specific ethnic and regional communities. Africa is home to well over a billion people and thousands of distinct ethnic groups, with more genetic diversity than any other continent. The idea that a whole continent, or a whole country, is genetically built for running collapses the moment you notice how narrowly concentrated the champions actually are. Framing this dominance in crude racial terms is therefore not only scientifically unsupported — it is a misreading of the very evidence, which points to something far more local and specific than "race." These are particular cultures and communities, not a biological category.

So if it isn't a magic gene, what is it? The answer is that sporting dominance is built by an entire ecosystem — and physiology is only one ingredient among many.

The recipe for a dynasty

When researchers who study East African running lay out the full list of contributing factors, genetics is just one entry among many, and arguably not the most important. What emerges instead is a powerful convergence of environment, upbringing, culture, and economics — a self-reinforcing system that manufactures champions.

Consider the childhood of a runner in these regions. Many grow up in rural communities where walking and running long distances is simply part of daily life from a very young age — to reach school, to herd animals, to get around. Long before any formal training begins, children are building an enormous aerobic base, developing their capacity for endurance through years of everyday physical activity at altitude. By the time a talented youngster takes up competitive running, they are starting from a level of baseline fitness that a child raised in a car-dependent suburb could never match. The training, in a sense, begins at birth, embedded in a whole way of life.

Then there is culture and, crucially, economics. In regions of real economic hardship, elite running represents one of the few available paths to wealth, status, and a transformed life. A single victory in a major international marathon can bring prize money that changes a family's fortunes for a generation. This creates an intense, almost unmatched motivation, and it draws an enormous pool of driven young people into the sport, all striving with everything they have. The ones who succeed become famous, wealthy role models in their communities, which inspires the next wave of children to lace up their shoes and chase the same dream. Success breeds success in a self-perpetuating cycle: role models create aspirants, aspirants create a vast talent pool, the talent pool produces new champions, and the new champions become the next role models.

And around all of this sits a training ecosystem of extraordinary depth. In places like Iten, elite runners cluster together in their hundreds, training in groups, sharing knowledge and pace and motivation, driving one another to punishing standards, supported by camps, coaches, and a whole culture built around the sport. An aspiring runner there is surrounded by excellence, immersed in the accumulated wisdom of generations of champions, pushed daily by peers who are among the best in the world. That environment concentrates and develops talent in a way no isolated individual, however gifted, could replicate alone.

Genes load the gun; environment pulls the trigger

The honest scientific verdict is that East African running dominance is not caused by any single factor but by all of these working together — and that, even to the extent some physiological or genetic predisposition exists, it means nothing without the rest of the system. A favourable build or a lifetime at altitude is only potential; it becomes world-beating performance only when combined with the active childhood, the cultural immersion, the ferocious economic motivation, the role models, and the training ecosystem. As researchers put it, genetic predispositions, even if real, do not translate into elite performance without the right environment, culture, and training. Nature may load the gun, but it is the environment that pulls the trigger.

This reframing matters, because it turns a story of destiny into a story of development. These runners are not simply born champions; they are made champions, by a remarkable convergence of circumstances that could, in principle, be understood and even partly replicated elsewhere.

The pattern everywhere — including a cricket-mad island

Once you see this ecosystem clearly in East African running, you start to recognise the same pattern behind sporting dynasties all over the world. When a particular country or region dominates a particular sport, the explanation is almost never a simple matter of superior bodies. It is nearly always a self-reinforcing system: a deep cultural investment in the sport, an early and intense exposure that starts in childhood, powerful incentives and clear pathways to success, a supply of famous role models to inspire the next generation, and a rich infrastructure of coaching, competition, and shared expertise.

Nowhere is this clearer than in cricket-loving nations like Sri Lanka. A relatively small island produces cricketers who compete with and beat far larger, wealthier nations — not because of any physical gift, but because of an ecosystem. Cricket is woven into the culture, played in every schoolyard and on every patch of open ground from childhood. It offers, like running does in Kenya, a genuine pathway to fame and financial security in a place where such pathways are precious. National heroes become role models who inspire millions of children to take up bat and ball. School and club structures channel talent upward, and a whole society's passion and attention pour into the game. The result is a nation that "punches above its weight" — not by biological accident, but because it has built, over generations, exactly the kind of self-reinforcing system that manufactures sporting excellence. The same recipe that fills the roads of Iten with world-class runners fills the maidans of Sri Lanka with world-class cricketers.

What sporting greatness really tells us

The instinct to explain a nation's sporting dominance by pointing to biology is understandable but usually mistaken, and it obscures something more inspiring. Champions are not simply handed out by nature to a lucky few populations. They are cultivated — grown from a combination of opportunity, culture, incentive, and relentless collective effort, in ecosystems that pour a society's passion into a single pursuit.

That is the real lesson hidden in the pre-dawn footfalls of the Rift Valley and the crack of bat on ball on a Colombo playing field. Sporting dynasties are not accidents of genetics; they are achievements of culture and circumstance. And there is something quietly hopeful in that. It means greatness is not locked away in the DNA of a chosen few, but built — patiently, communally, generation by generation — by people who care enough to build it.
