According to official data from renowned world oceanographers and geological institutions, it has been scientifically proven that during the last ice age, approximately 20,000 years ago, global sea levels worldwide were around 120 meters lower than they are today. However, NASA has officially stated that it has not confirmed any such man-made origin. According to geological excavations, this is a naturally formed limestone reef chain. This limestone system formed due to sea currents and sand deposition during the period when Sri Lanka and India were connected as a single landmass. Because sea levels were lower during the ice age, this formed a complete land bridge. Historical records note that people could walk across it to India on foot until around 1480 CE, after which severe cyclones broke apart this natural bridge, submerging sections of it beneath the sea.

The Lemuria myth and plate tectonics

Some old texts claim that a continent called Lemuria, or Kumari Kandam, once existed in the Indian Ocean and was submerged beneath the sea. In the 19th century, zoologist Philip Sclater proposed this idea to explain how the lemur species came to exist in both Madagascar and India. Along Sri Lanka's eastern coast, particularly near Trincomalee, there exists one of the most remarkable marine geological formations in the world — known as the Trincomalee submarine canyon. While the continental shelf around Sri Lanka is generally shallow, near Trincomalee harbor it suddenly plunges into a massive trench hundreds of meters deep. This canyon was formed either by a major geological rupture in the past, or through millions of years of seabed erosion at the point where the Mahaweli River meets the sea. This hidden underwater geological feature is the primary reason Trincomalee became one of the largest and deepest natural harbors in the world. Because of this canyon, even the largest submarines or ships have the natural ability to approach very close to the shore.

The Maritime Archaeology Unit of the Sri Lanka Department of Archaeology has discovered numerous pieces of evidence significant to world history through excavations at the bottom of Galle Harbour. What lies at the bottom of the sea in Galle isn't a man-made palace, but sunken ships — real evidence of the trade relationships Sri Lanka maintained with countries around the world. Marine archaeologists have recovered parts of numerous historic vessels, including the Dutch ship "Avondster," which sank in 1659, and the ship "Hercules," which sank in 1640. The bronze cannons, porcelain items, and old coins found on these ships prove that Sri Lanka was one of the foremost international maritime hubs of the ancient Eastern world centuries ago.

Arthur C. Clarke and the sunken temple remnants of Trincomalee

One of the foremost individuals to explore Sri Lanka's underwater regions was the world-renowned science fiction writer Sir Arthur C. Clarke. In 1956, he and his team explored the seabed at the foot of Swami Rock in Trincomalee. There, they discovered genuine historical evidence. They found stone slabs, carved pillars, and even sacred statues from the ancient Koneswaram Temple — which had been demolished and cast into the sea by the Portuguese in 1624 — lying amid the sand on the ocean floor. The Gulf of Mannar, located in northwestern Sri Lanka, was historically the primary natural zone from which pearls were sourced by traders ranging from the Roman Empire to Arab merchants. Ancient Roman and Greek cartographers such as Pliny and Ptolemy referred to Sri Lanka as "Taprobane" and wrote clearly about its pearl trade. The pearl banks on the seabed of Mannar are a naturally occurring zone where a particular species of oyster thrives abundantly. Due to the unique current patterns and shallow nature of this region, some of the world's most valuable pearls formed here. Even today, examining the sand layers on the seabed reveals tools once used by pearl divers of the past, along with the remnants of old trading vessels.

Global warming and the real risk to the coastline

This ocean transformation isn't something confined to the past. Due to present-day human activity driving up global temperatures, the massive ice sheets at the poles have once again begun melting rapidly. According to reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global sea levels are currently rising at a rate of about 3.6 millimeters per year. Oceanographers point out that if this trend continues, many low-lying coastal areas along Sri Lanka's western and southern coasts face a serious risk of being reclaimed by the ocean once again within the next 50 years. The sea-level rise that occurred naturally in the past is now happening again right before our eyes — at an alarmingly accelerated pace — driven by human activity today.

A national responsibility to preserve our marine heritage

Preserving this historical and geological heritage hidden beneath the seas around Sri Lanka is vital for our country's future. Developed nations around the world generate substantial revenue through underwater tourism and scuba diving by making use of their sunken ships, ruins, and marine ecosystems. Sites of genuine scientific value in our own country — such as the shipwrecks off Galle, the marine trench of Trincomalee, and the pearl banks of Mannar — must be protected from illegal treasure hunting and looting.

Rather than chasing false, mythical versions of history, if we accurately promote these scientifically verified marine heritage sites to the world, Sri Lanka could become one of the most valuable centers for marine research. Real evidence of a history just as vast as the history found on our land still lies quietly hidden beneath the blue waters beyond our shores. Our Sri Lanka is not merely a small island, but a precious land that has survived a series of massive geological transformations since the ice age — situated amid one of the most extraordinary marine settings in the world.
